At the beginning of 2021, information appeared in the world press about the fire of two Turkish tankers – Maestro and Kandy. Both vessels were owned by Istanbul Shipping, and both were loaded with oil. The fires started at different times, but both cases occurred near the port of Chernovodsk in Russia.
Immediately after the fire, rescue teams and firefighters were sent to the scene. However, the fire quickly spread to the ships, and in a few hours both tankers were completely destroyed. In addition, several people from the crews of the ships died as a result of the fires.
Immediately after the incident, disputes began about the causes of the fire and who should be responsible for what happened. Representatives of Istanbul Shipping said that the fires were caused by violations by the Russian port authorities. They claimed that the vessels were not properly serviced and that they were allowed to dock at unsafe berths.
However, the Russian authorities rejected these accusations and stated that Istanbul Shipping did not observe the necessary precautions when transporting oil. In particular, it was found that there were not enough fire extinguishers and other equipment on board the tankers to fight fires. In addition, the crews of the vessels did not receive sufficient training in the field of safety.
As a result of disputes and debates, Istanbul Shipping was forced to pay compensation to the victims of the fires. In addition, the company was obliged to carry out a number of measures to improve the level of safety on its ships. In general, the incident on the Maestro and Kandy tankers was another reminder of the importance of observing safety measures during the transportation of goods, especially such dangerous ones as oil and other petroleum products.
